General Remarks:
Region 1: German NW coast, notorious, by some the German Bight is called the
Cry Bay. There is some truth in it. But sail with common sense: avoid time
pressure, listen to several weatherreports, consider wind
direction and desired route (recommended: via Helgoland) including tides and
do not hesitate if the weather is kind enough, to proceed at night. Allright,
easy to say because after all, the fact remains that this coastal lee shore
with little refuge, strong tides, and tricky seas, especially in the Elbe
estuary, makes the German Bight a challenging stretch of water
Region 2: German NE coast, is a more suttle experience than the German
Bight. But don't underestimate any sea going passage. The Bay of Kiel is a
wide and open stretch. One advantage is that in this region there are no
serious tidal heights and that the only current is caused by the wind or
through a narrow passage. Therefore be aware of passages close to shore and
protruding points. Sailing from Lübeck along the East German coast,
literally and figuratively a neglected area, is fascinating. Development of
the area is however progressing at a fast pace and this includes
marinas, services and hospitality services.
Map scales? The larger the scale, the smaller the area.
1:1,000,000. is a small scale. 1:7.500 is a large scale. On a map with a
scale of 1:50,000 is 1cm = 50,000 cm = 500 meter
